Past Projects - O9

My earliest models in O9 (7mm scale on 9mm gauge, representing 15" gauge) were coaches built using sides from Keil Kraft Routemaster bus kits, obtained very cheaply years ago. Motive power came in the form of a Bachmann powered conversion of the Dapol railbus and Drewery Shunter (04) kits. All still survive, some rebuilt and others not in everyday use.

Other diesels that have passed through the workshops include one donated by well known plasticard modeller Clive Mortimer, which after a second rebuild still operates on Shifting Sands. 'Robin Hood' was sold during a lull in O9 modelling but has visited the layout since, whilst other smaller locos have been built and reached the primer stage before being sold on.

'Beach Halt' was built for a friend who wanted a little slice of my O9 layout 'Shifting Sands'. Similar technique and materials were used to the main layout.

Past Projects - 4mm Scale

A few photos of past 4mm scale projects:

Padgate Lane was a mid-1980s BR Wagon Repair Depot built on two boards, total size 6' 2" by 1'. The layout featured in Model Trains International magazine issue 43 and is now owned by by David Martin of the LYDCC group and can sometimes be seen at exhibitions in the North West.

Grimbling is a 4mm scale industrial diesel shunter, mush modified from a Knightwing kit.

Westwood Arches was a diorama built for a competition that never happened, but proved a useful photographic prop. It is now in private hands.

A Little Bit of Gn15

Having decided to set myself the task over the winter (2007) of finishing off some of my half started projects from the past, the first restarted project is a Gn15 diesel loco I started over two years ago. This lost it's original chassis frame and 'Black Beetle' power unit a while ago and I have rebuilt it on a chassis from a Dapol Drewery shunter (04) kit. This is now a static model, ideally suited to a small diorama.

Small details are quite easy in a large scale, one of the touches I have applied to this loco is a torn cab seat, this is made using cotton wool stretched out over plasticard, then covered in ordinary tissue. Once set I gave it a coat of plastic slurry and once that had set I used a knife point to slash the seat.

I like the 'feel' of working in Gn15 but as yet I haven't actually finished anything in the scale, this is down to a lack of creative thinking on my part. The supply of bits and pieces in store has increased so the day can't be far off!

Layout in a Boxfile

Having sold my 00 gauge layout earlier in the year I found myself in need of a test track for my 00 locos and somewhere to have a spot of shunting from time to time. Inspired by, amongst other things Neil Rushby's layout featured in Railway Modeller, I decided to have a go.

The box file has it's base raised with a combination of balsa wood and foam core, with a trackbed from foamcore with a layer of cork over. The extension board is from foam core with a ply frame to bolt it to the box file. The sector plate is from 60 thou plasticard. Track is Peco code 75.

My visual concept is the boundary between a scrap yard and BR in the Sheffield area, with a high fence forming one end of the layout. My reason for choosing scrap as a traffic was that I could have this high fence along the edge of the box, and traffic would also be carried in 16T mineral wagons, which have a slight length advantage!
